Sampling is an essential process in international cargo operations, ensuring that goods meet declared specifications, quality standards and regulatory requirements. Bulk commodities such as minerals, ores, grains, fertilizers, chemicals, metals, liquids and petrochemical products often require laboratory testing before shipment, during loading or upon discharge. If sampling is not performed correctly, laboratory results become unreliable, potentially leading to financial losses, disputes and operational delays. Kuzey Marine Survey provides reliable, standardized and traceable sampling services to protect the interests of all parties involved in the cargo movement.

Importance of Sampling in Cargo Quality and Compliance

Field Application of Cargo Sampling
Surveyors begin by assessing the cargo environment, storage conditions, packaging type, temperature, humidity and associated risks. Depending on the cargo type, different sampling techniques are used. For bulk cargo, coning and quartering, cross-sectional sampling, surface sampling and deep-layer extraction methods are applied. For liquid cargo, samples are taken from the top, middle and bottom layers of tanks to ensure homogeneity. For packaged cargo, random sampling, weighted sampling and bag/parcel extraction techniques are conducted.
All samples are collected using sterilized equipment and containers to avoid contamination. Each sample is precisely labeled with date, batch, cargo details and sampling location. After sealing, samples are weighed and documented in a Chain of Custody form to ensure full traceability. Samples are then delivered safely to accredited laboratories or provided to the parties as requested.

Reporting and Quality Assurance
Sampling operations must be supported by detailed reporting to maintain credibility and legal validity. Kuzey Marine Survey prepares comprehensive documentation indicating sampling methods, environmental conditions, equipment used, sample quantity and photographic evidence. Laboratory analyses may include moisture content, purity, density, ash content, chemical composition, contamination levels or conformity to international trade standards.
Sampling reports issued by our team are accepted by shippers, consignees, customs authorities, insurers and international trading companies. These reports help avoid disputes, verify shipment accuracy and improve overall cargo safety. By adhering to global sampling standards such as ISO, GAFTA and ICS procedures, Kuzey Marine Survey ensures transparency, accuracy and operational reliability.
