Safe and Certified Fumigation for Bulk Carriers

Ship fumigation is an essential process used to eliminate pests in bulk agricultural cargoes such as wheat, corn, barley, soybeans and similar commodities. During maritime transport, these goods are vulnerable to insect infestation, mold and biological contamination. Fumigation ensures compliance with international health regulations, protects cargo quality and prevents rejection at destination ports. Kuzey Marine Survey provides fully certified fumigation operations both in port and during voyage, following global safety standards.

The main objective of ship fumigation is to eradicate pests at all life stages—eggs, larvae and adults. Because bulk cargoes offer ideal conditions for pest reproduction, fumigation is a mandatory procedure for many export shipments.

How We Perform Ship Fumigation

Cargo Analysis and Planning

Our specialists begin by analyzing the type, humidity level, density and volume of the cargo. The ship’s hold structure, ventilation system and tightness are examined to determine the most effective fumigation approach.

Based on these assessments, fumigant placement, exposure duration and safety protocols are planned in detail. Aluminum phosphide tablets or sachets are typically used due to their proven efficiency and compatibility with bulk cargoes.

Fumigation Application

Ship fumigation may be performed immediately after loading in port or as an in-transit fumigation (ITF). The procedure includes:

  • Placement of Fumigant: Tablets or sachets are distributed across and within the cargo.

  • Sealing and Gas Tightness Tests: All hatch covers and ventilation points are secured.

  • Gas Release Monitoring: As phosphine forms naturally upon exposure to humidity, concentration levels are continuously measured.

  • Crew Safety Briefing: For in-transit fumigation, the captain and crew receive detailed safety instructions.

Aeration and Certification

After the exposure period, controlled aeration begins. Gas concentration is measured until safe entry levels are achieved. Kuzey Marine Survey provides internationally recognized fumigation and clearance certificates required by destination authorities.

Why Ship Fumigation Matters

  • Ensures cargo is compliant with import regulations
  • Prevents quality loss and commercial disputes
  • Eliminates all pest risks during long voyages
  • Provides safe transportation for bulk commodities
